Ive started to a host a site on Geocities site (with a hax to get rid of the adverts) and ive found lot of other free places to host sites also.

    http://www.free-webhosts.com/webhosting-01.php

has a great list of free webhosts, and there different strengths and weaknesses

I was just wondering what people thought of using free hosting. If anyone was doing it with a large scale site?

If you want free hosting for a STATIC website, i.e. with no databases, scripts etc., I suggest you go with www.50webs.com they've one of the best servers in terms of features, uptime & speed, its AD FREE

    Else, go with quotaless.com

& yeah, Geocities sucks with so many ads, snail-like speed & no FTP.

I am afraid with word free hosting, if you really have some nice website or project, please please don't go for free hosting. I have lost my high profile websites two time due to this crap free hosting.

Since it is free, so you even can't blame them. No DB backup no file backup, once site is crash. Remember that.

But again, I will warn you to remain away from free hosting, if you can purchase hosting.

I was recently considering using a free hosting service myself but after thinking it over it made me nervous about it, and looking around i see that theres no end of cheap paid hosting available and some great deals to be had with enough research, i know there can be problems still with the paid hosting of course but the very word free is very rarely that.

I remember doing my research into hosting services over 2 years ago and it warned never to be taken in by those offering unlimited databases or unlimited bandwith, as if they could, its unrealistic offerings.

Im not actually knocking free host services or anything, just taking other things into consideration.

"Free hosting" means "bad hosting". There's no exception to this rule :).
