    What are the best/most popular such forums?

    simple machines, phpbb, (is invision board still free). There are a bunch of others as well. SMF aka simple machines forum is decent. I use vbulletin, but it isn't free

    PHPBB is alright but I personally like and run vbulletin. Why do you want a free forum and hosting? I wouldnt be afraid that it will use that much badnwidth until you get a billziliion members.

    You might want to tryout phpBB for forum script. Plenty of mods and support.

    try phpbb - its good for learners and hosting try googling u'll get lots. but my personal fav is www.jconserv.net/
