There is a way to show up ads in your forum, i advise you pay for hosting, if you really want your site to stay up - there are alot of free forum softwares like Phpbb that have mods, which allows you to place your own ads on your forum

This is an extremely old post. But, for those of you finding this, a lot of the hosting companies now have the one click installations. Essentially, you buy the hosting, pretty cheap ($3-$4 month). Then, go into their applications area, where there is typically a walk through. As an example, you can install Wordpress or phpBB in a couple of minutes. It's pretty nice once you get the hang of it. We ended up buying unlimited hosting which makes it a dream. There's an article on my site if interested. (didn't want to spam a link :) )

    Two problems with that:

    1) There's no such thing as unlimited hosting. You start using a large portion of the resources, the host will boot you. A server has a finite amount of space and bandwidth and you have to share it with others.

    2) Those automated installers are often out of date and you'll still need to add in additional themes, plugins, modules, security fixes, etc.

If you have a hosting account at big hosting company like Godaddy or Hostgator then you will able to last for a while and when your forum start growing they will ask you to upgrade or move out. But at begin when you don't have money to buy biggest hosting account Godaddy or Hostgator shared hosting is good for forums but you ll have to move out after while.
