I don't know anything about aweber, but I've been using phplist for a while and find it adequate for managing a double opt-in mailing list. It's free too.
Good for you man. But how did you get them, that's what we are talking about. I also want to get such a software..
Do you guys actually have success with these list builders? I feel like no ones actually uses email addresses that they read with these lists
Let me know how that works out. I'm curious as to if you actually get responses from these types of list builders

I hear that freeautobot.com is a good autoresponder service. I'm not sure if this is what you are referring to. And they also send the emails out to your list without attaching advertisements like some free services tend to do. Let us know what which one you decide to go with and how it's working for you.
You're making a big mistake if you choose a free autoresponder. It'll cause your big problems in the end. Just spend the money on Aweber
An autoresponder service is much better than one you put on you own server, the hosting company is going to get pretty miffed if you attract SPAM complaints, it's their name on the line, not to mention the bandwidth you'll use. Most hosting companies have rules regarding the sending of email from your own site.
Hey check out: http://www.zookoda.com Its a free service without any limitations. And moreover, they have a really friendly and intuitive interface. That's what I'm using right now. Perfect for a weblog. You can even change your e-mail template. (Alter CSS and customize it.)
