I will just add that there are many alternatives to petrol/diesel that are starting to get more attention: bio-diesel chip fat oil excess wine etc etc etc The increased emphasis on hybrid cars and reduced demands for SUV's has started getting manufacturers to rethink their long-term plans with some of them considering dropping SUV production altogether. Many current cars can be converted, but it does require an expert to do the work. In the future, it might be possible to buy a standard car and then have a conversion kit thrown in for free where you can choose to convert it to whichever alternative source is locally available and have it fitted by professionals as well (car dealers will team up with garages to offer that incentive). Already there are some work-life changes happening as many places are now shifting to a 4-day workweek to cut down on commuter days. This effectively lowers fuel costs by up to 20% for people who solely use a car for their commute to work. Finally, Jsny and anyone else looking at adapting any type of converter to you car... good luck and just make sure you don't invalidate the warranty/insurance of the car.
