    Don't use register.com

There are a few forums which provide you domains in return of posting. You can try DNTemple.com, i remember them from long time back. Don't know if they still exist.

They let u take free for the first year, but they charge $35 as normal fees. And even on promos, u can renew it for $19.99 which is still expensive. And they don't give auth code for the free domain, and normally u have to CALL them to get it...

If that is true  they are evils, not different than scammers, like that they will buy domains by stealing money after taking your CC info (they will charge you if you don't CALL them) and after hunting people by free offers...
or what do you think guys?

You can get a free domain with some high paying hosting companies, but there are no other way to get a free domain.

It was NameZero and that was about like 1997 or 1998. I remember, I registered jessica1989.com and forwarded it to my expage. Haha. But then they started to move into becoming a ISP (NetZero) and that all changed.

The really free domains are not top-level domains, just some subdoamins provided by them. So if you really want to have a creative and attractive domain, you'd better find a registrar to register one. And also you can do as upstairs guy said: find a hosting provider, you may have free domain after using their package according to their policy.
