Hi. 1) Does anyone know where I can get the following for FREE: - free web domain - free email address (with my preferred domain) If possible, it would be great if my domain name satisfies the following: - be international, not localised (eg *.co.uk) - non-profit (eg No *.com, *.biz) - don't contains special meaning (eg No *.tv, *.travel) As long as the above are satisfied, that would be fine. I don't mind having to place ads in my website unless the ads are aggressive (eg NO pop-up, moving ads, reasonably-sized banners are ok). It doesn't need to be some famous top-domain level (eg *.com). [If no offer satisfies the above, then simply give me some websites which give free domain names!] 2) It's the first time I use a free web/email domain. In fact, what do I need to consider, eg: - what should I know about domain picking - does it matter where I register these domains - it seems some websites offer more than a domain name (eg additional services for DNS). Hmm... In fact, what services do I really need for a domain? - or any other things which I miss 3) I have found the following 2 websites: https://www.xname.org/index.php http://freedns.afraid.org/ It seems I can set any domain name I want for these kinds of services. But it seems I need to host my website at my computer. Any idea? Thanks.
Sorry for not really being any help, but I think it's unlikely you'll find a service like this for free. A more likely scenario would be getting someone to pay for this on your behalf and you giving them something back in return - but naturally you might find it difficult to get people to trust you (unless of course you know them ).
What do you mean? Do you mean there's no free domain name or email address to offer? As long as I don't need to pay any, that's ok. It doesn't matter if it has to be ad-supported or so.
There have been places in the past that offered free domains (Namezero was one, I don't think they exist anymore), but there are none now that I know of. Getting a free email address is easy if you don't mind what domain it is on. Hotmail (MSN), Yahoo, Gmail (Google) all offer free web-based email accounts. If you want it on your own domain (wai-wai@wai-wai.com for example), I don't think anywhere offers that service for free. Many domain registrars offer free email accounts with domain registration, but of course you're unlikely to find free domain registration.
I also don't think you will be able to file a free domain... Not unless you buy something and get a free domain with that... Anyways if you find someone providing free domains, please let us know
What does the "tk" in "dot.tk" means? Anyway, is it ad-required? Is it permanent, or do I need to renew in once in a while?
Would you mind if I ask people what you mean by "no free domain"? Actually someone pointed out http://www.dot.tk is free. Why the majority feel these offers don't exist?
I think the free Tokelau domains just forward to an existing site. I'm pretty certain you can't set nameservers and host the domain itself elsewhere unless you choose the paid option. Another negative factor is that if a free .tk domain falls below a minimum amount of traffic, you lose the domain. Also you said in your first post you wanted a global domain, not a local one.
What does the "tk" in "dot.tk" means? Anyway, is it ad-required? Is it permanent, or do I need to renew in once in a while? No ads..no renewal required.. as norfstar said you need to get minimum traffic..you can't set nameservers and host the domain ...so it is free but only partial domain...
Here you can get free domain http://www.free-domaine.net/en/ but you will need to show pop up windows with tons of ads and adware. Beleive me it is not worth. For 2.99 $ you can buy .info domain.
That's bad. I don't like to show aggressive ads in my website. And did you mention it shows tons of ADWARE, Huh?! I'm not sure whether I should purchase one or just get a free one or just don't get at all. My website is not going to be profit-making. It is somewhat a personal website which provide useful stuff and help others. The traffic is expected to be low, at least for some periods (eg 1-2 years), not to say I don't know if I can make a successful website or if poeple are interested in my website. Is it really worth buying a domain name in my case?
And the Tokelau option doesn't actually allow for deeplinking, it just creates the high level domain. It's kooky and not worth the effort of investigating. I spent an hour on it and that was more than enough.
What do you mean by "deeplinking", and "high level domain"? Would you mind explaining them in more details?
Consider your site I had something like www.ruse.tk and an internal page such as www.ruse.tk/about.php but if you clicked on that link you just went straight to the home page rather than the about page. To get to the about page you needed to use the true domain name - and hide it using frames etc. For a serious site that won't do because you want people to be able to deeplink. They now have a 15 second splash page promoting themselves, to quote McEnroe "You can't be serious"
