Free DNS Service?

I've been thinking to use a single DNS manager for all the domains that I own. Have them all controlled in a single place.
Good idea? Bad idea? Is it a stupid thing having a domain name hosted with GoDaddy and then DNS managed by MyDomain? I see no difference, is there any? All I can figure out is that it's a matter of setting the nameservers that MyDomain requires for them to take over the DNS management of your domain, yet I'm not sure what's the best practice. Can anyone tell?

    MyDomain.com
    requires
    NS1.MYDOMAIN.COM
    NS2.MYDOMAIN.COM

    GoDaddy.com
    requires
    NS1.SECURESERVER.NET
    NS2.SECURESERVER.NET

That is for your domains to have DNS management handled by each of the above mentioned registrars. Both offer this service free of charge, even for domains hosted with registrars other than themselves. I lean towards using MyDomain, if you need to know I can tell why but is that possibly a bad choice? Are there any other options? Better ones?

Not sure if it is a bad choice. The only thing I can think of is that some DNS Registrar will only allow you to use their DNS Servers if you bought and maintain the domain name in question with them, it can be an issue if you want to move out of them into another registrar. If you however plan to stay put and trust that the registrar will exist for as long as you need the domain name, you should not have any issue.

Well, some places may try to simplify the whole process of setting up DNS Zones that thus require you to use their interface where they will update your DNS details. That is not really a bad thing.

I used to use DNSMadeEasy.com for all my DNS work as I move sites from servers to servers quite often and they offer good service for a good price. How that things have settled down and all my domain names are now at Namecheap.com, I am using theirs now.

In the end, it depends on personal preference really. In any case, run through your domain name through http://www.dnsstuff.com and do a Timing Check, if you come out A+ or A-, you have a good path to the DNS Server and should get speedy response from them. That should be important in my books.

Thanks for your response, Eddy! I did follow the link you suggested however they aren't free for a test that I am up for, so I went further to search for a free DNS test tool. Found one: http://bokehman.com/dns_test.php

What I did was pick up two domains that I registered at Godaddy. One is using GoDaddy's nameservers, the other is using MyDomain's. I kept hitting the test button against each domain as the results varied. On an average, I got similar figures, both of them being .co.uk names which apparently counts, too. So I guess I can go ahead and use MyDomain DNS Manager for my domains registered with GoDaddy, can't I? MD is a reputable company, looks like it's been in the marked for longer than GD so no reason to be worried about their going down anytime soon I assume..

why don't you use both of them, as far as i know most of the domain registrars allow you to specify at least 4 name servers, others allow more for example moniker allows you to specify 6 nameservers. So, i would suggest use both of them in case one goes down you would have the backup. Also, i think it is good idea to use different services for domain registration , nameservers and hosting, it helps you recover quickly even if one of them goes down.

Depend on your particular needs so you can control all name servers from a single locations.

Rather than a registrar service to do such task I would suggest an external DNS management service such as zoneedit.com, even though you need to change nameservers similar to Godaddy's and MyDomain.

Well, yes you can use both of them but since there is no DNS Glue for both the My Domain and GoDaddy DNS servers you might end up with some red flags.
