What are the experiences with free directory scripts?
    Like for instance: phpld-2-151.2.0

What are the benefits and limitations?

It is very limited, I installed it once in my local host and compared it with the premium I installed in my website, big big big difference.

It's difficult to enumerate the limitations, anyway it's free, try it.

With the free version your directory will be spammed so much that you have no choice but to upgrade to pay. Though the very last upgrade to the free version have less spam than the previous version.

With the free version there are a numerous disadvantages. One that you wish you had on the pay version is the "click all, delete all" Click on the Tick box and it will select all, that is if you want to delete them, with free you have to do it manually which is time consuming.

That's just one of the many advantages of the paid, best to go to the script site and compare the two.

It is worth the $30 for the pay version, but if you are just trying to create a personal directory, then the free will serves it's purpose, then you're probably better off with the WordPress with a WP directory plugin.

when i started my directory, i started off with a free one.... did i make a huge mistake,,,

i have put in some good,... better than good hours to make it they way it is,... and now i cant even upgrade, coz of so much customization!

had i started with the paid version it would have saved me some hours fixing bugs, and features which the paid version already has!!

The free version of phpld does not have very good SEO capabilities. It also takes much longer to manage listings...

Okay... That's a good argument. Free version only for playing, thus.
