Google strive to make his index as pure as possible. Directory submission is died already, so these Google's moves are just cleaning. I don't think this can impact seriously on these sites

Directory submission is recognized as unnatural and spam links.

SEO seems to be harder to marketers.

I really don't see the point of free directory's. What are they trying to acheive? It's better to have a niche site. Google loves niche sites.

The free directories were only ever to boost SEO ratings. Honestly can anyone say they have ever found a website by browsing one of the free directories?

Directory Websites has always appeared pointless to me. "Directory" was just an excuse for providing worthless back links that fooled webmasters into thinking their site's URL must be listed on the said directory site..
Google itself is already a directory website when you think of it - a directory website with the largest database of sites listed and has a search app that produces the best and most accurate results. It's a pity that those excuses for websites were even allowed to rank well in Google when the truth is they contributed nothing to the internet community, but instead, the ones that became popular felt a bit powerful, and used it for biased activity. Oh hey there DMOZ :D

As others have said this was pretty expected. No one ever uses directories anymore, they were there to be abused for SEO purposes, nothing more.
