Free directories utilized by spammers?

    Hello DigitalPoint

I've just started submitting to directories, and one of the first lists i found was a list of directories on a forum.

It became very apparent that all of these directories were used, at least partly, as a way to promote spam. Which i'm not entirely comfortable with.

One of the methods they use is requiring a reciprocal link, not to the directory in question, but to a third party site that they want to boost in the search rankings (The pharmacy type in most cases).

This has made me vary of using directories. So i feel inclined to ask those wiser than me.

How much can you trust free directories?

Is it just a case of sorting the bad apples? Or are many/most of them less than legit?

Are reciprocal directories even worth the effort? or is it better to just jump past them to free non recip directories?

    Sincerely
    Tobias Ussing

There is lots of spammy directories and always will be. Two ways linking is not that effective anymore, so i would stick to free and paid.
When i add my websites to directories, i always check number of unactive sites to be sure that directory is alive. I also check content, if directory is stuffed with keywords i would not bother. If i can see some kind of requirements before adding a website, this is green light for me.. i can be sure that someone care about directory.
I don't understand people which adding sites to 1000's of directories, truth is big G is smart and adding to the bad directories may have the opposite result than expected.

I have found that this is easier said than done.

Nearly every directory I come across nowadays has 1000's of pending sites.

Do you have any advice as to finding directories more productive at adding sites?

To be honest with you ...no i don't.

But try type something like that in Google :

web directory " pending 200 " --- use different numbers and keywords, i'm sure that you will find something

Try use some good lists like directorycritic or info.vilesilencer.

Don't forget that lots of directories don't have visible statistics.

You will find good directories with 1000's of pending links but if all those factors what i wrote are actually visible on website i would not submit my website.

    Try this list - http://info.vilesilencer.com/

Dan works very hard to only include quality directories. If you find a directory requiring odd reciprocals and things, report it on his site and when appropriate it will be removed. Can't guarantee that they won't have a long pending queue, but that is watched as well and directories found not to be actively maintained are also dropped from the lists.

Generally, directory lists offered in forum posts are being shared with an ulterior motive. Sometimes it is someone simply sharing information but more often than not there's something dodgy going on.

Thanks for your replies. I certainly see your point and will make sure the directory is worth the time and effort before i submit to it.

Yeah, i was thinking that but wanted to hear what wiser heads than me had to say. Thanks for the link, I'm sure it will come in handy.

    Sincerely
    Tobias

it is not necessary to submit to 1000s of directories there are many lists choose from them just take sometime to analyze the directory look at their listings and if you think it has enough quality read theirs rules before submit

As the web is open to all, you will see all content submitted to directories. Quality directories will review submissions and not allow spam. However all will for a price.
