    Hi

If I would own a directory I don't know if I would require reciprocal links.

From my position as a webmaster, when ever I see a directory that has the apropriat category for my site I try to enter it.
BUT most directories (the smaller once) require a backlink to list new sites.

I would never link to a directory site because it has totaly no value to my users.

Also most directories that require payed listing or a free listing with reciprocal link are VERY small.
Only a few sites are online, which I think is because most admins think like I do.

Most directories try to monetise their site by payed listings and/or advertising.
But a directory is only as interesting as it has many usefull links in it.
I can't build a comprehensive directory if webmasters don't submit their site.
They don't submit because of the required backlink.

So WHY do all the small directory owners want backlinks?

    I realy don't understand it.

    Do you?

Being a directory owner I understand what you are saying those who are requiring back links are themselves to blame asthe prospect of requiring a back link would turn away most of the webmasters from submitting their sites which would result in loss of traffic
But i do not support a directory which requires back links from a site to submitted as it would be a loss to webmaster

    DaStarBuG,

I agree with you. Sites other than Directories do not have a links page.
Forcing a good site to put a back link is not good.

And in some cases you see a new directory just built with very few links in it ask for a back link or payment.

I am apposed to that idea. And it is good for an established directory as they get 100's of sites and have to vefity the quality of the sites.

None of my sites force for a Reciprocal or Payment.

They are free and if you add a back link, I make that site a featured link.

    Thanks

    @stock

your desikinkdirectory and dotrif header is out of line (the blue text overlaps the logo) in firefox ;)
You also should update your PR in your sig, cause they have all changed down.

Also one thing that I would defenetly include in a directory is that a search for a term also displays matching categories.
As well as all links that are optained by a search have the category (like a small breadcroumb) under the link description.

Just a tip for directory owners ;)
