Free .com Domain Name At 1&1?

So I checked out 1and1.com for kicks and see they are offering a free .com domain name registration for one year (plus $0.18 ICANN fee, so the domain is free but you still have to pay the 18 cent ICANN fee).

So I went through the screens, picked a dot com and it said all that was due was $0.18. No extra purchases were required from what I could see. I did not buy it (I do my registering through Namecheap). But I figured I'd post this thread just in case anybody is interested in a cheap domain and maybe someone will know if this is a regular promotion on their part or what.

Promotion is for new customers only I guess.

I think they are just looking for new customers and hoping to up-sell. Certainly, they are losing money with every registration that takes advantage of that offer so they are going to look to make money somewhere else. I figured I would post it because I see people here asking for cheap registrations from time to time and you cannot get cheaper than $0.18.

    There are obviously some catch.
Remember, “If you’re not paying for the product, then you are the product.” so, be careful using a free service.

I actually signed up for their promotions 2 years ago, every single year, on different accounts. Transfers were not a hassle. Although, they were charging me on paypal after I left, good thing I canceled the payment thingy on paypal

I think you need to pay PayPal $200 to make a payment on 1&1 dot com.

I tested this offer last month using my payoneer card. Forget about the renewals.. You still get to use the domain for the first year without any catch... So enjoy ;-)
