    wordpress is actually the best choice, most of the people who own a blog use wordpress

    I use word press but would like to be able to do more with the code on the site.

    Make sure if you use a free blog they do not have pop ups some will use pop ups that might have software that google will bann you for. I also have seen free blogs take some sites over sme with free hosting sites. Watch for pop ups and make sure they do not show adsense ads also.

    If a free blog starts showing adsense ads you could get banned from adsense and so could they.
