    I've been looking around the forum for good link building techniques and a few people keep popping up saying they find blog networks useful. My q is what networks do you use that are free to get into?

    you can sign up on blog directory like BlogCatalog and others, you can search them on google.

    Authority Link Network. Absolutely free if you have some PR 1+ sites lying around. I highly recommend that you utilize a private network which is on a subscription basis. I have had great results with High PR Society, Build My Rank, and Linkvana.
