There's a huge assortment of ways to try to build backlinks. It just takes time and creativity. Here's a nice list of linkbuilding methods that I suggest.
there are tons of free ways of link building. forum posts, classified ads, directory submissions are some commonly used ones to mention.
I think you should better try for the link exchange, and directory submission, it will definitely work for you.
Blog commenting in your specific niche. Commenting on related forums with anchor text in signature. Creating squidoo lenses on your niche. Article submission. Blog posts in relevant blogs within niche (takes time for results to show). Social book marking.
It's a long process that I find you've got to be very dedicated to. Stopping by forums like this can give you lots of tips, but can not really help you by pass the growing pains your site will go through. If it's any consolation though we all go through them, and I'm sure there's light at the end of the tunnel!
