Free Advertising Methods - Do they really work?

    I have have always wanted to know if some of the free advertising methods that used to be prevelant a few years back are still able to pull in income with today's busy internet population. I have had mixed reviews on the results of the methods mentioned below.

    1. FFA (Free for All)
    2. Online Classifieds
    3. Traffic or Hits Exchanges
    4. Safelists

    If anyone has had any positive results from these 4 free advertising methods, I would like to hear about it. If these forms of advertising are working for you, what type of business do you end up promoting? Business Opportunities, Get Rich Quick Ebooks, Traffic Exchanges, Internet marketing books?

    I would like to get a general census on what seems to be working with these methods, if any at all.

    The main ones now are article and directory submissions, forum posting (signatures) and blog posts. The free ones for starters.

    Those types of free advertising tend to work best for building an opt-in list or selling products (sometimes). I don't use them that much for getting backlinks or promoting my content sites, but they are useful for some of my product sites.

    * Content and Linking
    Write or re-publish articles about everything relating to your business. Then trade or place related web site links on these same article pages, thus driving visitors and search "bots" to your web site.

    * Digital Foot Traffic
    Tell as many people as you can about your site. The more traffic you drive to your web site the higher your PageRank will climb.

    * Linkbait
    Offer something for free. A download from your web site, unique information, a script ~ something that you can offer of value to your visitors

    I have a web site that generates about 400 hits a day.I have used AdLeaf free advertising. It generates about 200-300 impressions a day (not click) for me and sometimes I get a click through. Works pretty well and I can look at the stats on the dashboard. Given that it is free, I am not complaining.;)

    I'm not sure of the etiquette or rules of posting links to other posts yet, but thought it best not to just copy/paste the old post here.

    I posted to a similar question earlier tonight:

    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?p=889092#post889092

    If this type of re-post is a no-no, someone please set me straight (gently, lol).

    If you want visitors, do this! I give away free perfume samples to those signing up on my website.

    I went to 2 (count 'em, 2) freebie forums & posted the offer. This was back in January & February I think.

    STILL getting hits from these boards! Don't know exactly if they are converting to sales, but it's worth a shot.

    FFA site can have your site band from google! Bad News
    Online Classified ads do not generate enough traffic!
    Traffic or Hits Exchanges send you way too many untargeted visitors!
    Safe List I have never tried using so I don't know.

    But I do believe in free advertising it’s out there all you have to do is find it.

    Best of luck

    I don't think these methods probably hold much sway these days, and I'm not really aware of any professional marketers endorsing them. The best free advertising you could probably hope for is the SERPs, and the best way to rank high in the SERPs is SEO. Certainly a lot of hard work, but the price is right, and in my opinion, the payoff is worth the effort invested. :)
