Sorry to those who are experienced at this, but I thought my story might encourage others who were thinking Adwords might not work for them.

I received an offer from Google I couldn't refuse. I had been avoiding paying for visitors, thinking that I could generate enough visitors for free using good SEO techniques.

When I got the £30 Adwords Voucher from Google I thought, what have I got to lose?

With the recent launch of my Making Money Online review site I thought this would be the perfect landing for any clicks.

I created a stand-out advert using a catchy headline then I started by adding as many key word phrases as possible which were suggested by Adwords after they scanned the content of the site. I soon worked out the level of Cost Per Click I had to bid in order for my add to be shown and what I was willing to pay for the lead based on the potential return. Depending on the affiliate product my commission from purchases made through c4skins.net could be from $6 to $50 so I had to be careful not to spend too much.

I soon learnt which keywords were popular and discovered that one particular element of online money making was most popular and had a relatively low cost per click compared to the more generic "make money online" keywords.

I decided to set up a separate landing page for this particular niche to avoid people being put off and this has really helped. Within 24 hours I had my first commission, $23.50 from approximately $8 worth of clicks, not a bad return - but maybe it was beginners luck - next day, another commission from a similar product $22.50 so in total $46 in commission from approx $20 spent on clicks. The interesting thing is that I had almost 40 clicks and 2 purchases. this is 5% conversion and to be honest I am not sure if this is good or not just at the moment. Any experienced guys able to advise?

I have paused the campaign just at the moment to see if I can modify the landing page to make it more attractive to buy.

So, in conclusion my first attempt at Adwords and affiliates has been successful especially as I didn't spend any of my money, just Google cash!

I intend to refine and expand to see if this can work on a bigger scale.

I have also played about with some keywords for other sites and although the traffic has not been great in terms of revenue it has been cheap traffic and has allowed me to get a real feel for the keywords that are searched for and which ones to try and optimise the other sites for.

    Sorry for the long post.

    James

So basically a great marketing plan from Google, wonderful.

You didn't want to advertise and so Google would not be getting your money. They throw you a menial 30$ and you spend it. In doing so you realised that you want to continue using it. Therefore they've got themselves a customer. So bingo, hats off to them. but wait, you also then came on here and told us about it, so they're even getting advertising from you - chances are you have told some friends too, so even better.

Great inspirational story and nice to hear of success from time to time instead of people losing their money. But also, well done google for a little *generosity*.

    Very true.

I was only saying to my colleague yesterday how Google "own" the internet.

I remember people used to say (including me), how will anyone ever make any money running a search engine!!!

By the way it was £30 not $30, so at the current rate approximately $60 which isn't to be sniffed at in my book. Obviously didn't cost them anything, so yes a great marketing ploy.

I also has an offer for Yahoo Search Marketing of almost $100 but tried to run a couple of ads and after waiting a week they rejected them, so gave up! adwords is instant and much easier. I wish I was on commission!

I think that a lot of people started with the vouchers. i started when i got a £30 voucher in NET magazine a couple of years a go (maybe more)!!!! Vouchers are great if you have a good product and you are confident!

Regarding yahoo/adcenter they were giving away $100 but only for US, nothing for UK or europe!!! ggrggrgrgrgr

I know what you mean, I have written elsewhere about my frustration with Yahoo Publisher Network and so many other companies not allowing UK publishers to promote products etc. We can own .com websites aimed at the US market, but are disadvantaged - WHY?

Same with the cost of domain registration, why should we pay so much more than the US for the same product.

    Sorry, rant over. :)
