Forward a domain name to a existing site

I have a existing site that I want to forward a "exact match" highly competitive
long tail domain name too. 201,000 local searches, but it's a .co domain.
Which I doubt it will get lots of type in traffic.

    Anyways...

I've heard about simple forwarding, 301, 302 redirect. But i'm confused.

The following example is what I want.

www.lifeinsurance.com forwards or redirects to a life insurance company.

If you search lifeinsurance.com the domain is indexed.

Do I have to build a site and backlinks to it first so it can get indexed
before I forward or redirect it?

Is it worth even trying to do it?

    Thanks,

If you have some spare time I don't see why not but if you honestly doubt that it will get any type in traffic there isnt much point in redirecting the domain or trying to get it indexed then redirect it.

You don't need to develop a website to redirect it but surely if you have website and backlink it will help for seo and pr and will bring natural traffic. But for simple redirect you don't need website.
