So what is the difference of having a sub-domain forum from a folder forum?

If you have forums.digitalpoint.com is there a difference from having digitalpoint.com/forums?

Which one is better and why?

    thanks.

If the forum is related directly to the main site, go with the subfolder and use trailing slash (domain.com/forum/)

subdomains are treated as own site so generally you should use subdomains if they are unrelated to main site

Absolutely - from a SEO persperctive sub-domains makes things much more difficult. A sub-domain will have separate page-strength/link popularity from the main site - a sub-folder will share strength with the main site.

using a folder is better because it will help help your serp.

Can't you just use /forums and make a htaccess redirect to make it look like forums.site.tld ..?

I prefer the /forum but DigitalPoint has the forums.digitalpoint.com. Up to you really no biggie.

Dylan Tovey offered you the best explanation.

The subdomain looks much better, but the folder is better for seo.
