I'm getting around 300 visitors a day with the majority coming from other forums. Where does most of your forum traffic originate from?
Approximately : 70% SE Referrals 15% from Referring Sites 15% direct visits That's what Google Analytics reported.
About 80% of mine comes from Search Engines (almost all Google), the rest is direct visits and links from similar websites and forums that are in the same niche.
Most of the traffic to my forum comes from referring sites. 10% from search engines and around 25% traffic comes directly.

<rant> To whoever gave me a negative reputation point for my post, take a look at the very first post of this thread. The author clearly stats how much traffic he/she is getting - 300 visitors a day. If the starter of the thread can post how much traffic they are getting, I should be able to as well. I just went into a little more detail. </rant> Amount of traffic and source of traffic are directly related to your types of promotion and how much people like your site. If you have just a little traffic you might be able to say - 66% of my traffic is direct because people like my site and come back often. The truth is you get 3 hits a month. 2 of those you and your spouse. And the one other hit is someone who typed in the wrong address. If posting the amount of traffic my sites gets offended someone, then I'am sorry. The author said he got 300 visits a day from other forums. I took that as an example and ran with it. This could be an excellent thread with lots of good information. But for there to be plenty of information, we need to take into consideration not only "from where" but "how much" and "from where". Lets take a look at the whole picture.
I have no idea where that came from. I just wanted to know where/how other forums are getting their traffic. Maybe I missed something but I didn't know that was a bad thing to ask. I was under the impression that we could help each other out on this forum.
So was I, seems like a very helpful thread to show how most people get their forum traffic. Just ignore ~kev~, I think the thread is great and has been very helpful. Since it shows where other forums get their traffic from, it means that I can get target those biggest areas to get more traffic for my forum.
The question you posted is a very good one. I was ranting a little - notice the <rant> tag. That means you should pay little attention to it. I have received 3 negative rep points in the last 6 months, compared to the dozens of +1 rep points. ====================================== The types of traffic shows me where the forum owner is advertising and where they are not advertising. The results also show if the advertising is hitting the target market or nitch. If we knew how much traffic people are getting, we would know if the advertising is effective. My apologies if I offended anyone with my post.
Seeing your traffic data. I missed my blog. But i have 2 months more to create a brand new website with forum and blog. Hmmm.. It consumed my time but i hope its worth it after the release.
How can you actually tell? Is there somewhere you can get a breakdown of where your traffic comes from??
Tools like Google analytics or statcounter can give you detailed information on this. I use both on my webmaster forum.
It really depends on the type of forum and how unique it is. One of my forums gets most of its traffic through word of mouth and casual posting of links on other forums by the users. User loyalty on that site is very high which helps Another forum I own receives most of its traffic from google which explains why the user loyalty is not real high. I also have a forum that does really well but it is because it is associated with a content site that helps to drive traffic to it. The goal of any forum site should first be active and loyal users. When I visit a forum, if I see very few posts made today, I don't care if there are 2,000 users online at the time, I doubt I will come back unless that forum is extremely unique. -Zeras
