I wanted to promote my site on related forums (not just get the link on as many pages as possible). The approach I took was to contact the administrator of the board and ask permission to post about my site before actually posting it. I would say about 1/2 of the moderators said OK, and when I posted they usually replied to my post saying they gave permission, which (I feel) increased the credibility of my post and my site.
