I think having a subdomain (forums.domain.com) would make it react like a differn't website not connected to domain.com. I am not sure on that.

Anyways, I would say domain.com/forums/ is the best way. :)

forums.domain.com will be considred as another domain, so saying in SEO part, forums.domain.com is the better way.
For creating forums.domain.com, check in your hosting control panel, where to create subdomain

Ugh...explain how for the sake of a new domain is that better for SEO? It actually splits up your SERP penetration. I see no reason to use subdomains unless you are splitting up the domains on seperate servers. I am sure the www version of DP runs differently than the forums section.

Subdomains are acceptable for a variety of reasons but SEO isn't exactly one of them.

When saying about SEO, one reason for using subdomain is Link Weight.
    - domain.com/forums is considered as internal link
    - forums.domain.com is considered as external link
Internal links do not carry much weight.

When saying about SERP, if you search http://www.google.com/search?q=domain, I believe Google doesn't return many listings if it's sub-folder (1 or 2 only). However, in case of sub-domains, cause each sub-domain will be considered as external domain, there are more listings per SERP. Compare
    - http://www.google.com/search?q=searchenginewatch: 7 listings in the first page because of sub-domains usage
    - http://www.google.com/search?q=godaddy: 2 listings in the first page

Please correct me if I am wrong

the link weight that gate2vn is talking about holds good only when forums.domain.com and domain.com resides on different ips. but if you have both the case on a single ip there is no link weight whatsoever.

    for example,

    http://forums.digitalpoint.com has ip 216.9.35.60

    while http://www.digitalpoint.com has ip 216.9.35.56

If you site is based only on the forum or you have only one ip or consequent ips its better to have domain.com/forum
