    I tried a test:
One site was created severl months.
    It has not any backlinks.
Three Month ago,I added the link by one forum sig.
    I found It's update to PR2 in 2008.12.31.
And was be shown 8880pages at yahoo inlinks.
So I think forum sig is useful.
    Google love it.
I will wait result at the next 3month.

    Welcome talk about it.

I've found the same thing too. Created a site. Gave it no links but forums links and it got to PR2. Didn't do well in SERPS though at all.

I also use backlinks from forums, but I don't know how much effect does it have on PR because I have many other backlinks too. But I believe that it makes a difference.

I think forums sig have little or no effect on PR, because the page in forum is not stable, it continue to go down as people making new thread/post.

forums sig is useless. It sends some direct traffic, but it wont affect ur serp or page rank.

Forum sigs alone won't help you to gain rankings. The PR2 could be because of several reasons, I've aged domains with no content/link and they are still sitting at PR1/2/3 from last 2-3 updates. So you got PR2 not only because of forum sigs. They help, but not much.

Google will count the sig links as a link like it does with every other link, however once it goes through the filters I do think it will be devaluated.

Forum posting with a relative content and information are always counted.
Back links from forum posting is worthy no doubt on it.
And its a best tool for direct traffic

So,signature marketing is still a high-octane fuel ...and its a legitimate technique in internet marketing.

How many signature links do you need from a forum to make a difference to serps? 1 - 100 - 1000 or more?

It can only bring significant benefit if the forum is related to your site content.

So as a website designer I would be better off posting in a website design forum than a SEO forum? Or is SEO near enough?????

PR is not everything, the reason why you not gaining serp is because even if you have 500 links they all from same site.
