Well, an owned license costs $160...you could also get a yearly license for $85.

From this I guess its for an internal use (Is it??). IMO phpbb is very very convenient to use. It has some vulnerability, but since your usage is only internal, go for it. VB will be waste of money for you for this situation.

VB is not wate of money. I have used phpbb... and now am using vb.. its big difference.. if one has budget he should go for it... if you are expecting traffic go for vb...

I am not sure his purpose, guessing that its for an internal use, I am suggesting to use phpbb. Here VB can surely a waste of money. If it is really for outside world, I too vote for VB.

    Yeah, I'll second punbb.

It's probably one of the least server-intensive forum programs out there, so it's faster for your visitors and costs you less in server hardware.

I am going to use it for my new website. Not internal use. I am having a phpBB forum on one of my sites. But that one got spammed. getting Adult links posted from unknown users.. !!

Make visual confirmation for user login, use a MOD called cspam which makes the links come with a nofollow, use word filters..
I think these can prevent the spammers upto certain extent.

This is what confused me.. made me think that its for an internal use.
