    your boss just ignored them? 

    you can not ignore importance of forum posting and blog commenting. it is a free tactic to advertise and improvise your site. i think your boss just aiming at Social media marketing. it is good too. but if you want to have good seo in your site, then forum posting and blog commenting, both have same importance like micro blogging.
