    Depends on how targetted the forum will be. If there will be alot of general conversation then I'd do it forums.yoursite ... if it's going to be very specific then yoursite/forums.

    It's really a matter of preference. Some prefer one over the other. I've found no evidence of having an advantage using subdomains unless the topic is different from the original site.

    either of them are used by many sites.

    i suggest you to choose one that you like eg. /forum/ then redirect the other to what you are using.

    there will be many people either type in forum or forums, so you dont want to lose any traffic.

    there is something i don't understand...does google see redirects as two sites with the same content and therefore lower PR?
