Guys, if you have a blog ( wordpress ) but you are hosting it on (dreamhost) and have your own domain name yyy.xxx.wiz can you add a forum to the blog or no? How much do they cost? How would you go about doing this? Any advice appreciate it, thanks!

if you own that domain then you can always make a subdomain or subdirectory (like forums.xyz.com or like xyz.com/forums) for the forums.

Yes, subdomaining is maybe the way to go, but for search engine optimization you may want to have a seperate forum and just link it from your blog.

How expensive is to have a forum? I am sure I can host it with the hosting service that is hosting my blog, but as far as the script/application goes, how expensive is to set up one?

SMF forum and PHPBB forum are free to use

i think they are embedded in fantastico if you have cPanel hosting

or you can download them and make your own installation

it's easy to install a forum - easy to customize but hard to fill with members and content :D

It's best not to use a free forum though. Go vBulletin or IPB.

Thanks a lot guys for the info. Now i am debating if it would be best to make the forum as a subdomian to make it more part of the blog, or simply to do it separately and put a link to it.

How much is vBulletin or IPB?

For a standard license (lifetime), IPB costs $150. Their Business license costs $300

vBulletin's lifetime license costs $160 and their leased license is $85.

Hey sorry to hijack your thread, but I don't want to start a new one. With dreamhost, can you use 'pretty permalinks' for WordPress? I've been developing my blog on my own computer for a while, and have been unable to correctly get the .htaccess stuff working. This weekend I'm planning on signing up at dreamhost, and I was wondering how that was for you.

e-mail them asking if they have .htaccess support - it's standard in hosting to have his but checking with them won't hurt while not checking would ;)
