Just recently added a directory service to our expat travel advice site.

    Free submissions at www.foreignperspectives.com/directory.

We're aiming the directory at those who are either expats or who would like to be so it covers the likes of moving firms, news sources, travel etc.

Coming soon is www.wholeearthdirectory.com which will be much more general so if your site isn't in the broad expat category (which is fairly broad), please wait for WholeEarth (week or two).

    Thanks,

    Arnold

I was planning on creating new categories as the links come in thereby hopefully avoiding the "empty directory" feel. So, the lawyers will be appearing under the "buying your property" for now and later under their own subcategory within that.

Comments definitely welcome about the design... I'm new to this directory business.

I think you should change your design , that background is killing my eyes. Also you could add more categories that you will know for sure that will fill with sites ( an example would be regional :D ). I`ve submitted few under the categories existent but would like to submit more once you get more sections for your directory.

    Good luck,
    Dks

I take the point on the colour. I just rolled that out from the main site where it's largely hidden by text. Slightly toned down version should be coming very soon.

The "regional" issue is an interesting one. From what I've seen the majority of the directories in the world are effectively regional directories but only with one region ie America (or, at least, where-ever they're based) with everything else shunted off into "regional".

I'm creating regions as required (and moving existing links to the appropriate place as needed) but they are underneath the main categories. So, for example, under the top level category "Activities & Hobbies", you'll find Americas, Asia, Europe and Worldwide representing the various areas that an individual site serves.

I'm hoping that this will avoid the situation where you get, say, all the hotels in the world listed under Accommodation (very common) rather than Regional/Europe/Accommodation or the equivalent in my case of Accommodation/Europe.

I've not worked out how to put a "suggest category" link on the site which sounds like a very handy thing to have from what you say. Help on this welcome!
