For World of Warcraft Junkies

Recently my brother started playing this on the Internet, I've seen little plugs on tv shows like My Own Worst Enemy and have seen several article requests in many of the sites I write for online.

I like to have some sort of expertise in an area so it doesn't take a lot of research, so I was wondering how beneficial it would be to learn this game.

Seriously, I've seen over 50 article requests over the last couple weeks. For those of you who play this game would it be worth the time to learn everything? Or does it have this final fantasy appeal where it takes hours upon hours.

Plus, I'm curious if it costs money on a monthly basis or if it's a free game everyone plays.
