For those that fertalize their own lawn, I have some questions

Last year we hired someone to plant grass on 1 acre since we had a new house built. (About 210 feet wide and 110 Feet deep) About a month later after the grass came in and everything was looking alright, we applied some Scott's Turf builder lawn fertilizer. We only picked up a couple bags. The bags said they would cover 15,000 SQ feet. Our lawn is about 23,000 square feet. So we thought we would be good.

We set the spreader to what it said and those 2 bads only did the side yard so we had to pick up an additional 3 bags to finish the job with each bag saying they would cover 15,000 SQ feet.

The bottom line is that we purchased 5 bads @ 15,000 SQ feet which equals 75,000 SQ feet. We only need to cover 21,000 SQ feet. Did we apply it to thick? It really didn't look like much came out and went on the grass with each path. Then again, I'm not sure how much is supposed to be on the ground. A few weeks after applying, the grass still looked the same (Light green color) and it still looks like that right now.

What did we do wrong? Did we apply to much or not enough? I was doing some calculations and 2 bags @ 15,000 SQ feet should be plenty for my lawn. It can get costly getting 5 bags @ 40.00 per bag each time I fertilize.
