For the Pursuit of Happiness

I wrote this essay as a response to the movie "The Pursuit of Happyness".

    ----------------

Homelessness is a growing problem in America today. Every year, the amount of Americans in poverty and faced homeless increases. In most cases, high living and housing expenses are the reasons why people are homeless in the US. Eroding work opportunities and dead-end low-paying jobs also lead to poverty in the United States; a high 13.3% of America's entire population are in poverty - which are gradually leading to homeless Americans.

Although the United States has specific programs such as Welfare to help its citizens in poverty, families still face the challenge of low-income work wages, high mortgage and house bills, and other costly living expenses. Welfare just doesn't cut daily rising living expenses.

The movie "The Pursuit of Happyness", a movie starring Will Smith as notorious Chris Gardner, expresses the financial problems many Americans face of poverty and eventually homelessness. Performed by great actors, the message of the movie was delivered: dreams are achievable. The pursuit of happiness as stated in our own Constitution is not a feat that every American is given, but is what it is: a pursuit.

In Cruz's article, "The Stories We Tell", the movie is greatly criticized. He stated that people are not given equal opportunity to the pursuit of happiness. Happiness, he argues, is not necessarily a social class but linked to character and abilities.

Let's face it, poverty is a big issue in the United States. 13.3% of the entire population, or more than 30,000,000 people in the US are in poverty. There's a lot fellow Americans can do to help, but are we doing it? The statistic percentage rises every year.

I liked that movie. Why? Because of the fact that it gave me the reason to believe that DREAMS ARE ACHIEVABLE.

even when you need to sleep in a Subway station with your son? That's unrealistic...

The reason why this movie is bad is that it gives ppl false hope. When you are in bad situation, you get out of it one step at a time. He just got lucky (trust me, no matter how hard you work, you will not get a job the way he did) to get a job like that
