Being an authority site is the main factor in SEO.

The only way you get to be an authority site is by having loads of quality backlinks.

Wikipedia is seen as a trusted site/source. This has a great positive impact on its search results position.

....Wikipedia isn't owned by G. It is owned foundation, don't worry about the idea of biased thought. Jimmy Wales is obsessed with no ads, no profit, Google would COVER Wikipedia with ads.

Backlinks to wikipedia articles = the main factor. There are lot of them. Also Wikipedia articles has not only ordinary backlinks, but lot of backlinks from authority sites. So it's the main reason.

I appreciate the fact that Wikipedia is for no profit but relies on public donations, however sometimes they dominate so many keywords on search results that I wonder why should we still go to G or Y to search, might as well head direct to wikipedia.
