Being an authority site is the main factor in SEO. The only way you get to be an authority site is by having loads of quality backlinks.
Wikipedia is seen as a trusted site/source. This has a great positive impact on its search results position.
Wikipedia is owned by google , i guess thats why , also they introduced a new way of searching , so that the top 10 results are a blog a forum a wiki a gallery a news post etc etc alot of different sources so that the serps got some more variaty

Backlinks to wikipedia articles = the main factor. There are lot of them. Also Wikipedia articles has not only ordinary backlinks, but lot of backlinks from authority sites. So it's the main reason.
I appreciate the fact that Wikipedia is for no profit but relies on public donations, however sometimes they dominate so many keywords on search results that I wonder why should we still go to G or Y to search, might as well head direct to wikipedia.
