Well, I'm American and I believe anyone should be allowed to dress as they like, so long as it is not indecent. Many years ago when I was living in NYC I remember a man who dressed up in the finest business suits, but had tin foil wrapped completely around his head. There was another guy who dressed up like a viking. How on earth a democracy can purport to tell an entire people what they can or cannot wear when it comes to something as inoffensive as a burka I simply just don't know.
I read an article about wanting to ban the burqa/face veil due to security issues. If you have a whole community of people that are continually dressed in that manner with the whole face and body covered potentially someone that is wanted by the police could hide out in that manner. I can understand why they would want to ban it. Yet if someone wants to wear a necklace with a religious symbol that is not a security threat and should not be under attack.
People should be allowed to wear what they like, as long as they are not in a situation were everybody has to do the same. Like in uniform, they shouldn't have priority, like that teaching assistant I saw on the tv not that long ago. But I can see that some people may be intimidated by it, and how could that assistant do her job in a full body and face cover?
