For Full-Time Net Marketers: Why are you successful?

Discussion in 'General Marketing' started by NowOnline, Apr 22, 2009.

We often hear that of all those who try to make a living wage off the net, only 3% succeed. I don't know where this number comes from but it's a common truism (or myth) that we generally agree with.

If you've beaten the odds and have been earning a good living off the internet, I am curious about three things:

    1) What were you doing before you got into IM?
    2) How long did it take you to break thru and begin making a decent income?
    3) Why are you successful? What special talents do you have that make you one of the fortunate three percenters?

It's important to understand what it takes to achieve the "Internet Lifestyle" because the 97% who fail should know if they are wasting their time and money chasing an impossible dream.

    Thanks for you input! :D

    I'll give my response...

    1) What were you doing before you got into IM?

Selling fitness memberships and personal training at a health club, then briefly driving truck.

    2) How long did it take you to break thru and begin making a decent income?

About 9 months give or take.

    3) Why are you successful? What special talents do you have that make you one of the fortunate three percenters?

Successful because I kept believing it was possible and now know it's possible because I've experienced it. I'm not rich yet by any means, but I've done pretty well for myself and will continue to do so as I set larger goals and move forward.

As for special talents, I don't really feel I have anything super. I've just been persistent, set goals and been determined like a friggin mad man to make it happen.

It's NOT an impossible dream, but most won't make it because they give up too soon. They start to doubt themselves and doubt turns to failure and then ultimately quitting. Never give up! That's what I can tell you.

I always enjoyed when the odds were against me, I suppose that gave me extra motivation.

    Hope that helps.

    -Kyle

That's great advice Kyle, and I agree that motivation, persistence and determination are key factors.

Also, you have a previous background in selling to a particular market (fitness) and I'm sure this has also been a great foundation to your success. People skills, business ethics, plus knowing how to set goals and achieve them are important elements that many noobs lack.

    Congratulations!

Maan, I wish I could resist to reply to this post, because I'm currently working on a killer article which essentially encompasses the very precious point to which you're driving with these questions, aaaand, since you so psychic-like hit me on the topic (either that or my reticular mechanism is playing tricks), I'll give you a sneak preview right now: The title is not definite yet, but the main theme is something along the lines of "The one success pillar most newbies ignore to establish, yet they must if they ever want to achieve that covetted lifestyle" and I'm talking about ... beliefs! The big "why?"! Why, in gods name do we bother with all this "business, marketing, sales..."; and don't get me wrong I'm not claiming to have 'the answer', I do -- but for myself. I'm just saying that every one should first and before all else of importance, dwell upon answering that; when they answer the question 'why', a good follow question is "what does that mean to me, really?... and what else" do you get where I'm going?! because inevitably there will come a point in ones business where they'll have to decide between personal profits and providing value up-front for the prospect; many times the decision is disguised under the particular circumstance, and even more often... there's little time to decide! can you guess when such a point arises, which choice is the preferred one of those 97% you referred to?... and not the one of every successfull 3 percenter whom we emulate daily! well, I know those were lots of questions, call me socrates if you will, but I was just trying to contribute to the discussion in your head with some insights that i've had! good luck!

    1) What were you doing before you got into IM?
I've owned a variety of businesses and currently own a brick and morter Advertising firm.
    2) How long did it take you to break thru and begin making a decent income? Once I realized what worked about 3 months. Figuring out what worked took me about 8 months.
    3) Why are you successful?
I out work the other guy... I'm not that bright, don't look real handsome but I'll outwork anyone.
4)What special talents do you have that make you one of the fortunate three percenters?
Nothing more than work ethic. In all actuality, I'm less talented than most.

    1) What were you doing before you got into IM?

I was working in a local garage fixing vehicles damaged in road traffic accidents.

    2) How long did it take you to break thru and begin making a decent income?

Approx. 6-8 months to start making a decent income and have now been making a living online for 10 years.

    3) Why are you successful?

I work extremely hard, sometimes around the clock when the need calls for it. I am very determined and have a lot of passion for what I do.

4)What special talents do you have that make you one of the fortunate three percenters?

I am a fast learner and taught myself how to program in various web based languages whilst developing my initial projects. I also read a lot and absorb information, learn from others mistakes and how others became successful.

Yes, I think this is a topic that is very important to everyone in this forum, and I hope you let me know where I can find your article when it is submitted. It'll be well worth reading.

Everyone who succeeds, as we can see from the replies here, is determined, persistent and passionate about making it online, and so am I. No matter how much we accomplish, there is always so much more to be done and new tactics to learn constantly.

For those who are having difficulties, get used to it -- it is tuff for everybody, but it is not impossible as long as you keep at it. Best of luck and never give up!

1.) Working as an accountant/bookkeeper for the a college bookstore
2.) I don't make a decent income yet, but it took me about 9-12 months before I started making any money at all.
3.) I don't know if I qualify as successsful or not yet, but persistence is vital. Realize that you aren't going to be Frank Kern overnight, but take the steps necessary to move you in that direction. Day in and day out. Also being extensivley computer litererate helps.

    Funny guy...

I have been trying to find out where this 3% figure came from, and I am dubious about the truth of it. How would anybody really know? There are 1Billion+ net users -- who can keep track of everyone's success or lack of success?
