I'd play ya a tune but then DP would owe me royalties... But seriously, if anyone wants to badly enough I can pm a link to one of my faves that I've recently recorded.
Well, as long as DP is footing the bill. I am not an attorney, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
Depends on how much of it you write down, and why, and how and whether you distribute what you copy. If you copy out the whole book and start handing out copies, you are in trouble. You quote a couple of sentences for a book review, no problem. If you take copious notes on file cards while writing your Ph.D. thesis and show them to no one else, who's going to know or care? Whether you copy it by hand or by xerox really does not change the analysis.
One day I can't even sing a song to my mom or during a wedding to a bunch of friends. I could be sued too .. What a joke!
You still might want to consider buying the lyrics database, but get the rights to distribute lyrics. You will probably have to pay a royalty fee on each sale, and you can make a small profit on each sale by charging for the lyric downloads. People will always be searching for lyrics, and whatever people search for, they will also buy, if they want it bad enough. There are ways of offering free lyrics legally, like free Christmas lyrics (see my digital sheet music site listed below). You could offer a site with free Christmas lyrics as a lead on, and have other, highly searched for lyrics offered at a price. Everyone gets paid, including the copyright holder, and you.
Restaurants get sued if their employees sing "Happy Birthday" to customers, because that song is copyrighted.

If you have a lyrics/guitar tab site, I'd pull the lyrics/guitar tab text see: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4508158.stm The US Music Publishers' Association (MPA), which represents sheet music companies, will launch its first campaign against such sites in 2006.
thought it should be brought up again with the lyrics sites sales going on, if i would have know it, i would not have just purchased lyricsfeed.com for 600 bux, now all but useless, maybe the next sucker will see my "old news" before making a purchase.
this topic should be sticky.... i was just going to grab a lyrics site. my luck was i saw this topic...
Read the latest news March 10, 2006 - A Statement from the MPA Regarding Websites Distributing Unauthorized Sheet Music and Tablature at The Music Publishers' Association of the United States website. Then visit my site (see sig) for an example of an authorized, legal sheet music and guitar tab site.
Seems a lot of ppl with on-topic knowledge and experience are followig this thread. Hoping that it would not be considered as spam, I wanna repeat my question that I originally asked at http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?p=824419 Hi all I'm wondering if it would be legal or not doing this: on a web page: "Songs about New York 1 - Frank Sinatra - New York New York 2 - Statue Liberty - Liberty ooohhh Liberty .... " Would publishing Google Ads on such a page would cause legal problems?
Are you posting the music files, lyrics or sheet music, for Frank Sinatra - New York New York and Statue Liberty - Liberty ooohhh Liberty? Or just the names of the songs and artists? If you were pubishing an illegal music site, then I would imagine Google would object to that. But if you are just putting the names up, I cannot imagine why they would object. Here is the link to Google Adsense policies https://www.google.com/adsense/policies which may contain an answer.
Yea "just the names of the songs and artists". I think I could not express myself clearly. I'm also curious about finding out, whether it's legal considering the artists' point of view. Is it a copyright violation if I publish the name of the song and name of the artist without contacting the copyright owners for those songs?
I think you meant to write "I think I could not express myself MORE clearly" I would suggest you read "A Statement from the MPA Regarding Websites Distributing Unauthorized Sheet Music and Tablature" at the http://www.mpa.org/news/show/5Music Publishers Association website for copyright rules and regs.
Why would they do this, the reason ilisten to music is because ofthe lyrics if i see some lyrics i like ill go and buy a single of them!
