For A Possible Business Major, how much will IM experience help?

Hello, DPers. I was wondering how much could experience with IM [Internet Marketing] help with a possible Business major/minor in the future, as I'm still relatively young and just looking to get a head start.

Quite the truth of the matter is, I don't plan to do IM for the rest of my life, I find it a legitimate way to make some money and possibly make a lot of it with hard work, but I'm planning to go for bigger things than just IM. So would you guys say experience with IM, especially at a younger age (still in high school), be valuable for someone planning big in the future?

Thank you for any replies, I've been dabbling in this for a while, but I'm curious to know what all of you think.

I assume you mean Internet Marketing...Experience is always useful. I'd rather have a kid out of school working for me who had some practical experience opposed to being great at the latest Madden. Marketing is just a means to an end. All the details will be up to you to sort out, of course. It sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders. Good luck.

Yes, I do mean Internet Marketing, I should have clarified but thought it was obvious on DP forum haha, my bad. And thank you, ROAR, my only enemy at this point I fear is Time, but I guess I'll just have to do my best by working hard. And studying like alexica73 says.

I'm currently a business double major at Virginia Tech in both Marketing and Management (about to graduate in December!). The problem with most business programs around the country is their general neglect of anything that has to do with the Internet. Some courses do touch on Internet marketing but don't elaborate much at all. Having a background in Internet marketing will definitely be helpful in setting you apart from your peers when it comes to trying to find a job after graduation. Good luck!

I'm a business major right now and I have taken 4 or 5 marketing classes. Like someone said above though is that university, for some stupid reason, is against teaching anything actually useful in the internet marketing world. I've even taken an internet marketing class and what I learned in that class was very simple and didn't go very in depth. Everything they taught I already knew, and they use different terminology for a lot of the stuff that most people on the internet use.

What I did notice though is that whatever I learned through Internet Marketing, actually over-laps with a lot of classes that I'm taking. Anything IM related that you've learned so far, will be talked about in one class or another. So if you take what you've learned on the internet thus far, and can apply it to all of your other classes, you will get a better general understanding of whats going on. Somethings you've learned online will help in marketing classes, management classes, IT classes and a few others.

Good luck with your business degree it's really fun!

IM experience will help and in some ways with your internet knowledge you will be ahead of alot of other business majors. You already are working on your own business so it will compliment your degree and vice versa.

I learned absolutely nothing in school relating to online marketing. Be creative and do your own do diligence.

I see. So from responses so far, it seems that IM will definitely assist me in some way, especially if I learn to be quite good at it.

And to clarify, I will probably minor in business because I'm planning to major in a science or something involving technology. My big plan is to couple together the knowledge from both to become successful.

Thank you for the responeses so far. If anyone else would like to add any input, I'll appreciate it.

IM will definitely help you in business. Majoring in something involving technology and minoring in business is a good idea, I'm sure both will provide you with necessary tools for you to become successful in the future. Try applying education to real life experience and real life experience to education world would help you gain a great deal of knowledge to be young & successful. Good luck!
