Not really but more importantly if your backlink profile isn't natural looking it will probably hurt you. Of course there is a lot of information missing for anyone to know the answer. Like what is your current ranking, what does your backlink profile look like, percentage distribution of anchors, number of links, dofollow vs nofollow, percentages of link distribution by type etc etc. Sitewide links are a good way to get slapped these days. A few well placed backlinks within relevant articles on a handful of domains with high metrics (DA/PA and Moztrust) are worth way more than a footer link. The ghost of SEO past is going to haunt you tonight for asking that question.

Do you mean placing a keyword link in the footer of your site to your own homepage?
This trick is very old, and it had worked for some guys I know in the past to boost their search ranking.
I don't know if it still works these days, since Google may be discounting the value of such links.
At any rate, I would rely on this to hit the top 10...

When doing a recovery I looked at my Majestic stats and say, of the 30,000 links my site had (not an unreasonably number, less than 100 links per proper content URL) 16,000+ were from one site I had never heard of. Same anchor text on every one. Within 48 hours of this massive blimp appearing I had the ULN from Google for the term the anchor text was for.

    I learned 2 things here.

Firstly - Google have a hair trigger reaction to egregious anchor text spamming and SWL's
Secondly - If they are all from one site - it's pretty easy to clean up (one email contact - the web-site owner is normally more than happy to stop his link juice leaking out like this)

Took advantage of the opportunity to do a full link survey and clear a lot of other crud out at the same time

To answer your question more quickly?

Don't use SWL's at all. Pity those poor Wordpress theme marketers who had a link back to their selling site in every theme they sold. Seemed a perfectly natural thing to do, but they got hammered for it on October 4th.
