    I think tracking templates can be done with simple CSS or JS trick.
    For CSS :
    background: url(your tracker goes here)

    For JS :
    img = new Image();
    img.src = "your tracker goes here";

    Hope that helps.

    I think this is a case where naming and shaming (without using direct links to the perps, of course), and contacting other directory owners could pay off. I don't support copyright infringement. So if I'm inadvertently linking to a website that's using a free template with footer links removed, let me know and I'll take the link down. I would hope the majority of other directory owners feel the same way.

    It's still a PITA to police this kind of thing, but the public humiliation and de-linking of a few might serve as some deterrent.

    I think there can be legal issues here. You provide your piece of work for free, under specific terms. And they clearly violate them. Isn't there a way this can be stopped other than checking sites all the time?

    No marko you see the problem is this guy don't know how to edit anything else other than the text.

    the site which is using genuine template ... i have designer link as an image and he cudn't remove it without loosing the quality but he have removed the sponsor link of Alive Web Directory

    On the other one which uses Cooperation template

    he have removed the footer links .... he dont know how to edit the right side otherwise he would've removed those also ...

    because the rightside sponsor link is there just as a space taker ... for the user to put their sponsor links ..

    he removed the sponsor link of www.paiddirectory.com giving the credit sponsor and removed desinger link to idk.in givin me the credit of a designer.

    I wouldn't use something that looks obviously like tracking and because of that more probably will be removed along with the links. I think inserting something that is indexed by SE, doesn't look much like tracking, and can be searched later could be better. Incorrect spelling of words could also help imo.

    Normally it is ethical to give credit links in footer; Many directory owners are releasing templates for public use after sponsoring. From that they expect back links. The spent money to do that! It is mean to remove that links!

    I also designed some template on behalf of Alive, Aviva, Mingleon directory; So far I found people using it keeps the footer link including designer link.

    Personally I don't mind if anybody wants to remove designer link; But I expect
    to let me know; In that case they will be deprived to get any free support from me!

    I'm always in favour of blacklists, at list it gives a heads up to anyone that should be involved in business with the violators.

    In particular, it might discourage submitters to that same directory.

    And 1 successful lawsuit would put off many, unless thay are in some remote country.

    But this shouldn't be just for footer link removers.

    Even I hate to keep them, but it's better than paying, and I know there aren't other options.

    Totally agreed.
    We shouldn't buy listings from those who do remove the footer sponsors links

    Personally I wouldn't like any kind of tracker in template I use for my site.
    Having different and unique text(or part of text) is ok. For example:
    1. design by Site1, sponsored by Site2
    2. design:site1 and sponsor:Site2
    etc.
    You can search exact phase on Google and locate all sites using that template.
    Also, you can see visitor or two in your stats very soon after template is up and bookmark it.

    Likewise, I been very close to sponsoring a template. The removal of the 'Sponsored by...' strap is the only thing that is stopping me going ahead.
