I love watching American football. Getting tackled by these guys is just like getting run over by a car.

    Soccer IS Football...

So I assume by Football you mean 'American' football?

Anyway I prefer Football (soccer), American Footbal although I havn't seen alot of it, to me just seems like Rugby with body armour and really long intervals...

It's like comparing checkers and chess. In football (football) every play is a set play for each of the 11 players with several contingencies based on the defense presented. Each player on the field is involved fully involved not just walking or trotting into position. I was recently at a Chivas game and sat back and watch a few players at time sprinting and a dozen or more players walking/trotting.

There are approximately 20 offensive drives per football game with about 7 successful drives. In soccer, you probably have 180 drives with about 177 of them being failures is some cases 180 failures. In football you never have a player faking an injury or diving, in soccer at least in the men's game, it's not uncommon to see it several times per game.

And there is no rule in football as poorly designed as football as soccer's offsides rule. It's not bad enough that it's poorly designed (see ice hockey's offisides for a well concieved way to eliminate loitering in front of the goal) they also assign two of three referees to call the lousy rule.

If you grew up with a choice you would most likely choose the football that is not called soccer.

BTW when did the UK go back to using the name football? My grandparents came from the UK (one grandpa played for a club called Rangers that had some rival called the Hibs) and they only used the term soccer. :D

I consider Rugby, football (football), and aussie rules to be sub-species of the same species.

The rivalry was/is between Rangers & Celtic as in Glasgow Rangers & Glasgow Celtic, the divide was on religious grounds with Rangers being the Protestant half of the city and Celtic being the Catholic side.

Infact it was only in 1989 when Mo Johnson was signed by Grahame Souness (the then Rangers manager) that a Catholic player payed for Rangers.

The local Glasgow derby is known as the Old Firm Derby.

The grandfather I knew was from Ireland but he spent his early adult life in Glasgow and he did talk about Rangers/Celtics but my other grandfather was the one who talked about the Hibs. You can have more than one rival. :)

Before anyone says anything let me just state that I like both football(American, duh) AND soccer. The only reason I like football better is because it has less complicated rules, and because there is more contact:).
