Both are good. You need some team to play football, For Gym You can go individually to build your body.
Well I think that if you want to work on your body, and remain fit and have some cuts in your body, then working out/exercise/gym would be the better option. I don't know if playing football gives you cuts and a good body. Maybe someone experienced can answer that? I workout only.
I prefer playing football as it gives you that full workout that you wanted that would not bore you especially playing with friends.

Gym is giving a shape to your body and football makes the stamina i think football is much better then gym.
