I'm required to do a little grey hat SEO, so I will make all texts on the index page of my website as small as possible (8 or xx-small size) and will put it on the very bottom of the page. The index.htm will be just an intro page with a nice image and enter button. Is this OK? Or does the Google bot also look on the size of the font as well?
Font sized too small for the human eye to read can flag as 'black hat' - http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=66353&query=font+size&topic=&type= though small, but readable, is probably okay.
size 8 font will work just fine. size 8-12 are standard size fonts used mostly. or what you can do as a workaround if you wanna use larger font links without being seen is, use a small table at the bottom and use a solid color background image. say, a solid black background image. then make the links with the same size fonts but use the link color to be black or whatever background image color you have. google can;t detect the image color therefore they will not know that you have same color link as background image so its OK. it can be considered black hat but legal form of black hat in my view
