i just had a look at a thread on WMW and i wanted some view from guys at DP. i was planning to remove some links from our website directory. the links were placed 2 years back, so my aim is to remove those as the link partners are no more linking to our site. At the same time, the problem is that, the directory gets good amount of traffic from Search engines and also makes money. So removing lot of links wont be a good idea. I was thinking of making a no follow tag, but i have heard many bad things abt it, so want to get some view from members here. Either i should make it something like a redirecting link, so that Google doesnt see that we are linking to them. Or i should use no follow tag on links I read the following from few guys at WMW Should I selectively add <rel="nofollow">? Red flag. I wouldn't touch that attribute with a 10 foot pole unless of course I had a blog or similar outlet. The whole purpose of that attribute was to curtail blog spamming. Another Member Quote GoogleGuy last year when the tag was new we were discussing this issue and googleguy gave the OK to use this tag on webpages. No problem it's just a flag for googlebot to ignore a link (treat it as text). They don't penalize you for using noindex meta tag do they? I use it on a couple of affiliate links that only block bots anyway. I'm sure nofollow looks better than a "browser check" or one that has a few partial sentences because of no java. ========================== Whats the feeling of ppl at DP Thanks Gurpreet
I wouldn't use the nofollow attribute in links. It was created to prevent blog spamming by users and basically tells the search engine that you do not trust this link. I also read somewhere that some search engines follow these links anyway. Better off using a redirect script or javascript
hmm, i was worried about the Search Engines raising alarm on my website if i use no follow. i am also more intrested in using redirect or javascript
You can use nofollow to the sites which you dont want to keep a crawlable link.. There is no harm in doing so to you.. Yes.. mostly other search engines crawl these links and will show in backlinks.. Google certainly not..
Either remove the links or keep them in place. Don't mess about with nofollow or redirects. Only keep the links in place if the sites are good sites though.
i am not saying the websites are poor, but we want to stop linking to any website, so we are thinking of this option. dont want to link to bad or good websites.
A web directory that doesn't want to link to other websites?!! Came here by chance from Google but can't resist getting my name onto what has to be one of the wackiest SEO strategies I've heard of to date. Enough people have already mentioned what a bad idea using rel=nofollow is. Using it will just get you a bad rep and reduce submissions. I guess it's all about whether or not you want the current success you say you have to continue for much longer!
Don't you think Google is going to be able to detect that you swap links with these sites even if you use the nofollow....Even if G doesn't assign a penalty now you can be sure it will in the near future. I am now seeing a lot of directories lately that are using the nofollow tag...Get the SEO for Firefox plugin and you will be able to tell which directories are doing this
its not a bad strategy. We exchanged links with them 2 - 3 years back and most of them have deleted our links, so we do not want to link to them anymore. Also, reciprocal links are doing more harm, so do not want to link out now
Having the same issue with 2-3 year old links, I choose to add the nofollow attribute to them. This way the page stays in place. My thinking is that it is a unique content page that google has indexed. I just do not want the outbound links to pass PR. Keep the pages and nofollow the links. There is no Google penalty for using nofollow and the other SEs it has no importance. Just remember to keep you internal links working. Don't make a orphan out of the page.
I don't think it is a bad idea to delete the one way outgoing links to sites that were previously reciprocal links. If it makes a difference whether it is a directory or an e-commerce site like mine, what value is there to having one way links out to sites? If the goal is to get inbound links then is there a value to having outbound links to random sites? Particularly if the one way links to go to non authority, low pr sites. Am I confused. I think not, I hope not. I have linked out to a few sites that I believe have good authority, have a value to my customers...... I also think there is an issue of integrity here. If you reciprocal link to a site and they then delete your link should you reward that site with a link from your site. I vote no. What say you guys?/girls.......
A no follow would be considered trying to cloak/ hiding a link that G see's anyway but only pass's on mimimum juice. Humm ? Vote: Just remove them. Have you read http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2005/01/preventing-comment-spam.html
