Focused or Well Rounded Link Building

Is it better to focus your link building efforts on one keyphrase and one URL (the homepage URL), or build links to various pages and use many different, but very similar, keyphrases? I have done both techniques, and both seem to work well, but when I did the "focused" technique, it was awhile back, and things may have changed. In short, if I want to rank quickly for a specific keyphrase, should I build links with the anchor text of just that keyphrase and point primarily to my homepage? Or would that seem unnatural and I wouldn't rise up the ranks quickly? Thanks!

Well, you can target a few KW / KP. For example, in a set of KWs, im targeting and link building the TOP 3 KWs; focusing in my major pages (asides from my index page).

I see, so you do a few keywords, and just a few major pages. How is that working out?

Focus on a theme - your main keyword. Have several keywords on those themes. Learn to dig for low competition, high profit keywords. May take some time though. Then use your main keyword and spread your little keywords.

On promotion, first link within your site through internal linking with your super keywords. then on backlinking, follow the 50-50 rule. 50 percent homepage links, 50 percent other pages. Don't promote your homepage alone. Use your main keyword 20-50% of the time and use your little keywords 1-20% of the time. Promotion percentage will depend on the competition you have.

    Hope that helps. ^_^

If you target one keyword only - you may hit the Google booming filter - disappointing stuff to deal with...

I like to target several keywords at once. That way you may rank well for one keyword before another. You may find easier keywords to go after that way. In Google's eyes it would look more natural to use at least several different keyword variations as anchor text.

you can target one keyword for your homepage but if you need to do a lot of link building, use keyword variations. its not natural that you will only get backlinks with one specific keywords and google knows that too. so if you have a site related to Flash Games, you can use keywords like flash game, play flash game, flash game online, online flash game, etc. if you have inner page optimezed for other keywords, do the same for the inner pages as well

After I started a forum, I went back to all the forums I'd previously posted in and added a signature with the same anchor text. For those key words, it rose to about #8 in Google for about two weeks then fell to #41.
Google must have found it unnatural.
