I'm making a video site with a youtube clone. My hosting can host it but they say the following:

Unfortunately we can not install or support the ffmpeg with libogg, libvorbis and libmp3lame libraries file encoders under our shared servers, because they do use large resources when converting every thing else we do support.

What does this mean? I really don't have a clue. Will I still be able to stream mpegs, wav etc?

You should still be able to stream (well do HTTP transfers of the video/audio files anyway its not real streaming), but you wont be able to convert any uploaded videos on that server. So to add new videos you will need to convert them to the destination format (if its a YouTube clone I imagine that will be Flash) someone else, then upload them to your server.

However the application that requires these may check to see if they are available and if not refuse to run.

Video sites like YouTube clones are disliked by hosters as they hammer the servers, if you want to run it properly you really need a dedicated server, even a VPS may still be a problem as again the CPU is a shared resource.

There are shared hosters that do allow these kind of sites, perhaps someone here can point you at them.

Thank you, but however, I have decided to embed the vids, it seems the easier and cheaper option, at least for the time being. I can't afford dedicated hosting, plus there are loads of dodgy hosting companies that lie about their capabilities and resources just to get you to purchase. And once you've purchased, that's it, they have your money and they don't care about you any further.
