I know flash and google dont mix well - but would it harm me (as far as SEO) to have a smaller flash header banner on a site?

It would be the only flash element on the page, the rest of the page would be SE Friendly

No, that wouldn't harm you. Lots of high ranking sites have flash headers.

Plus, Google can apparently read flash files.

Google can and does read flash files. More than that, google counts flash links as backlinks... :blink:blink:

Does this mean "large" flash elements are no longer an issue?

The Flash has to be built properly, any text that is broken up is not good, when you publish a flash file, publish the HTML page too and look at the source code, you can see some of the text content. The only think you really lose by using flash is the alt link from the image that would be there instead. Just watch for redirections causing you a problem when you use flash. SEO GUY ranks very well and uses flash, but I think relies on the html content + offpage to get him right up there.

I was thinking about a flash banner at the top with the rest of the page being 'normal'

I don't know what weight gives Google to Flash elements. As far as i'm concerned, i still use html for most of my text. It seems to me like the safe way to play it....

I can only tell you that i saw the evidence that google spiders Flash elements, and if you have a link in them, it counts the links!!!!

If i were you I'd go for the flash banners where needed. All the rest should be html....
