Started today at 8:35GMT in Brazil, the eclipse’s path extended across the Atlantic Ocean, Northern Africa and it ended in Northern Mongolia. A partial eclipse path, within the much broader path of the moon's penumbral shadow, included the northern two thirds of Africa, Europe, and Central Asia. In total eclipses, the Sun is blocked out by the lunar shadow and the sky gets dark as though it is night. Total eclipses are the only times when the Sun's outer atmosphere, the corona, can be seen. The best observation point for the astronomic show was Libya, where there was even a special place for this, called 'Eclipse City'. The eclipse was also visible in Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Libya, Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Georgia, Russia and Kazakhstan. The following total sun eclipse can be fully observed in Canada, Greenland, Siberia, Mongolia and China on August 1st, 2008, followed by one on July 22 2009, which will be visible in India, Nepal and China. We remind you that viewing the astronomic phenomenon without any protection is harmful to the human eye and special glasses are recommended.
