Traffic will make your stats look good and may help to reduce your Alexa rank, if you are looking for targeted traffic then it could help your site. I would prefer 10 visits and 5 converting to sales than 1000 visits with no sales.

I take it that you wish to promote a directory? If so, then advertising in other directories may not be the right thing, unless you want webmasters solely chasing PR or freebie hunters.

Real advertising is totally different, and more is involved than a simple link eg: Directory/SE listings are not adverts!

Adverts are large displays or notices that describe sevices in a public medium to promote sales - webmaster directories only offer listings and few offer an advertising display ad format.


The Differences

Eg: Yellow Pages sells adverts, Yell.com sells listings. (listings aren't display adverts and are minimalistic in functionality eg: zero colour/images)

The above is a pretty bad attempt at an advert by me, but done to show what a display advert is like. You see it's NOT the same as a search engine or directory listing and will do a different job - which is to sell a service.

If you were to buy one of these it will help produce sales, and not just deliver traffic like a simple listing would.

True display adverts have the following:

Black & White/Colour Option
Choice of sizes
Different display options/fonts/text/headline
Extras
Product Images
Company Logo
Design beyond web scripts/Totally bespoke

.... the downside to these is cost, and it's not cheap.
