How a new web designer without previous clients gets clients in the beginning of his career? I think nobody would like to place an order with him.
In my opinion, u can always try to make a few website design and show it to peoples or client. if ur design's good, no one won't use ur service
Do websites for free to start for friends and family, or just make a few sites for your portfolio. No one will hire a designer with no folio.
You'll almost certainly need to do work for free if you want to build up a portfolio, you can also do some designs yourself to show what your capable of and pop those in your portfolio as concepts.
When I started offering mobile website design, I did two sites for free to improve my skills and have some samples to show to future clients. You can use classifieds sites to offer free web design.
I used to participate in design contests, build my very first portfolio there. You can learn a lot, how to understand clients, pitch your ideas, plus if you are good (or lucky) you can get some monies.
I started (many years ago, but it should still work) by offering to create sites for free to businesses that would profit from having a site but didn't. (They had to pay for the hosting, of course, but any business that can't afford $5/month isn't really a business.) The only proviso was that I be allowed to unobtrusively link to my site, as the creator of their site, in a small font in a bottom corner of their site. I got some business that way, linked to my site from those sites, etc. (The more links there are on the web to your site, the higher up you go in most search engines.)
CMNS is right....if you don't have a portfolio u could use these design sites to help build one then you would have something if u save ur work to show potential clients.
What I did was design some websites for show to display my work in a portfolio. Then the first clients I got I did their websites for really cheap. The rest is history..
I started by doing the first ones free in exchange for recomendations to their contacts. You will be suprised how quickly your customers will come. One word of warning: Make sure that you do you BEST! There are a lot of good web designers out there so you need to stand out. Good Luck!
