Where do you guys draw the line between SEO and actually writing content that your visitors would find interesting?

If you're running a static page, I'm sure this issue isn't a problem. But for those running a niche blog, what has everyone experienced in this?

You can't really SEO without content can you? Otherwise what are you going to SEO? So write shitty or interesting content and then SEO it.

I should've phrased the question better.

Crappy content can be optimized, correct? And so can great content. But what would be more beneficial for rankings and traffic:

subpar seo & great content vs great seo & subpar content.
